Mid Semester Summary:
I want you to look back and consider the semester stated goals and what has been achieved during the first half. And we will also make a plan of how to proceed over the rest of the semester.
I think we had a very productive review in terms of the guest critics’ comments.
One thing that stands out possibly is that the group site research proved to be very informative and to prepare the jury to talk about the projects, I think it saved time on questions about the site and allowed to concentrate eon the projects, in this way I think it was successful. With the exception that the information about Star City never made it into the presentation and it must be added. Also, for the final I would like to see again some of the initial personal mapping’s which were very good, and a lot of the information in them was lost from the presentation.
Think of your own goals for the semester, evaluate how far you have gotten and what do you have to correct in order to get there. I want to echo on one of the closing comments, when Jin-a said “it is your time” I want you to use your studio time to fulfill your goals as designers.
In terms of the larger semester goals, we did have 4 weeks to develop the individual schemes, do you feel you made the most of this opportunity, did you make sketches, study models and work on your design?
You did in fact make the group site massing model and place individual projects on it. I was really surprised to see everyone make the same types of model, I think everyone should find a way to show their own project that works for them.
Now let’s look at the studio materials and the stated goals for the semester. Go back and re-read the syllabus and the midterm presentation recommendations. Did you follow the presentation recommendations to:
“begin with an image that shows your building and its relationship with the urban fabric” think through which image in your presentation does this best. Making such a drawing forces you to consider and design important relationships.
“show the inside and outside of your building through models and perspective drawings”
“include area and FAR calculations” even an approximate calculation is helpful for this effect.
Guidelines and recommendations are made to be broken, but you must al least make a conscious decision that your strategy is more appropriate to your project than the recommendation if you want to break it and still have a successful presentation.
As we move forward I promt you to consider the stated goals of the syllabus and think of your project in terms of these, and your own goals, ambitions and ideas. The studio structure is clear and we have managed to keep very close to it. We are now in the 10th week and starting the synergy phase, because we rescheduled the midterm in order to have the guest critics. But this is what the syllabus reads:
9th week: Synergy phase (3 weeks): After the midterm presentation the students will assess the impact their individual buildings have on the whole of the site, and begin to address the relationship of the building with the urban fabric, as they further refine their schemes.12th week: Architectural schemes: at this stage the projects will evolve toward completion of the architectural project.
13th week: Having completed the overall designs, each student will pick a focus point within their project, that illustrated the buildings urban interactions, enlarge and document it with a model that shows detail and materiality.14th week: Final charrette, for two weeks.
16th week: Final presentation.
Final presentation is in 6 weeks, this is the last stretch, so make use of your time intensely and strategically.
From now on, I will give desk crits to two students on every class and the other two on the next class, we will make a schedule. On the class after your desk crit, you will be presente at studio working on your project, I will be available to answer questions and guide you in any way. In our weekly meeting you must show progres of your project for your desk-crit to count. In this stage in your training the design process is just as valuable as the result. I have not made a single comment on this so far, and shouldn’t have, suffice it to say you are Graduate Students and I consider you as such. Attendance and regular progress are a very important part of my evaluation of you.
During this period I will also bring more examples of projects and documents for you than in the beginning of the semester. So far I have wanted to let you construct the knowledge base of your project, without too much intereference. Now I want to help you envision your projects.
On November 12th
We will have pinup in my office. You will show your overall project and pick an area that will be enlarged and highlighted in your final presentation.
I think the main goal for the rest of the semester is to get your project to match the conecpts and goals that you outlined in your presentations.
On November 26th
we will have a pre-final group pinup in my office. Use this pin-up to get feedback from me and the group about your presentation structure. Certain things you can begin to prepare from now, such as the missing Star City information from the group research… also, the star city towers should be added to the group site model.
You will then have two weeks to work independently on your project until the final on the second week of December. I will still visit studio on Tuesdays and Fridays to take attendance and any questions.
As always I encourage you to post materials from your presentations to the blog... and some of the pictures that Dong-Ho took as well.
