Research Presentation
On Tuesday, September 7th the group will present their research of the last week and documentation of the site visit. By now the group will have obtained a CAD map of the Area and Professor Kim Seiyong will facilitate a Digital map of the larger context of the site.
The areas to be presented are:
Identity of dwellers, passersby, workers and students in the site and adjacent areas, and their relationships to important presences in the area, such as the University Campus, Star City and the influence it will have once completed, the 'leisure district' and the city train station, as bringing in a population all its own.
Uses of space in the site, and how are this uses distributed in the horizontal expanse, and also vertically within given lots. This includes both the more established uses such as stores and offices as more informal ones, like kiosks and street vendors. Also of interest are in-between pockets of space. Also, the official rules governing these uses, such as zoning, permitted densities and FAR must be investigated and presented.
Means of transit used to arrive at and move around in the site. This includes, the mass transit (trains and busses), hierarchy of nearby roads, car traffic, bicycle lanes and parkings, sidewalks and pedestrianized streets.
Materiality of the site, streetscapes, areas of pervious, or impervious surface, soft of hard. Topography and surface water flows, natural or controlled.
Infrastructure, location of important sewer and storm drain lines and water and electrical supply lines.
In short, the questions asked are:
- Who is there?
- What are they doing?
- How do they get there?
- What is the place like?
- How does it work?
Some overlap is expected among the points outlined. The presentation will have a group format within which each student's research will be inscribed. There will be ten minutes for introduction and conclusions. Each student will have between 10 and 15 minutes. A short, one page written summary is encouraged for each student, but not required.
